Opportunity often offers itself in very subtle ways. Events that seem unrelated to your product or service can give you an opening to promote your business or build yourself as a content expert. Do you recognize opportunities that can help you promote your business?

Let me give you an example: Barack Obama.

Barack Obama cleverly used the new media to reach more people than his competitors more directly, with less expense than running a traditional campaign. In essence:

1. Obama was clear about his goal.
2. The message of his campaign was undestandable, clear, consistent, and hopeful.
3. He used Web 2.0 to his advantage by:
- Creating a sophisticated, yet friendly website that was easy to read.
- Accepting donations online
- Blogging
- Leveraging social networking sites for viral marketing
- Building his support lists via opt-in forms
- Creating awareness for his campaign with Youtube videos
- Using the mobile network to reach people through their existing contacts.

A Google search for Obama’s marketing strategy reveals approximately 656,000 results. That is a lot of analysis. After reading a smattering of the articles I found that the content seems fairly consistent. A lot of people analyzed and wrote about what Barack did to win the Presidential bid. Most of the authors just wrote articles. But one author did something really different, something that is very slick. He promoted a teleseminar.

Last week, I listened to the free teleseminar that highlighted the strengths of Obama’s Marketing Strategy. Cleverness points go to Neil Venketramen, Deborah Battersby, and Mary Nack for recognizing a subtle opportunity to build their credibility as content experts. The teleseminar presented information that was widely available to the general public, but Neil, Deborah, & Mary put it together in a well-organized, professional presentation for attendees. Their presentation was really interesting to listen to. The teleseminar was well-attended. By offering it for free, they have given listeners a sampling of what they will get if they sign up for the 4 week basic training and have a better chance at converting teleseminar listeners to paying customers. Very smart.
